課程概述

本課程原本訂為「藝術的無本質－當代美學理論」，而其基礎課程訂為「藝術的本質－古典美學理論」。因課名過長，為了縮簡名稱，並配合臺大哲學系的課程安排，分別簡化為「當代美學」與「美學」。
在教育部「跨科際問題解決導向課程計畫」裡，本課程計畫主題為「道德、藝術與生命科學的折衝與整合」，其中藝術及其相關之人的審美能力等等，為人類所特有。哲學試圖說明這種現象，並使其說明成為美學的一大課題。本課程與基礎的「美學」作為課程計畫美學藝術組的兩門課程，即在探討人的這個藝術與審美的現象。
西方哲學依循蘇格拉底以來下定義的傳統，抱持本質主義（essentialism）的想法，哲學的工作變成在給予其探討的對象「本質的定義」（essential definition）。古典美學在十八世紀幾乎都在為「美」下定義；而在十九世紀則在為「藝術」下定義。這種情況一直沿伸到二十世紀中葉。本課程作為進階課程，在於說明當代美學理論的反本質主義，亦即不再接受美或藝術具有內在的本質，因此表現為對古典美學理論的反對與顛覆。這樣的思想與當代的哲學觀念與文藝思潮有密切的關係。本課程將釐清這些觀念與思潮，使學生掌握時代的脈動。 

課程目標
 本課程的主軸結構是沿著當代美學的發展來進行，包括「品味與藝術判斷」，「藝術與經驗」，「當代的藝術定義與新媒介的問題」，以及「藝術與真理」等，溯自十八世紀到二十一世紀，其中包含黑格爾、尼采、維根斯坦、Danto等哲學家，以及社會表現、藝術媒介、語言遊戲（language game）、視野主義（perspectivism）等概念。經由這些哲學思想與美學概念來把握當代美學的發展脈絡，藉茲理解人的藝術與審美的現象。
